All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
LECTURES:
1. Cell, tissue and organ transplantation: history, application, types of transplantation
2. Cell, tissue and organ transplantation: immunobiological, surgical, ethical and legal issues
3. Immune system: role, organs (primary, secondary), cells (lymphocytes, granulocytes, antigen presenting cells), immunity (innate, acquired, active, passive), immune reaction (cellular, humoral)
4. Major Histocompatibility Complex (HLA system): main characteristics, role, location, polymorphism, linkage disequilibrium, products, tissue distribution, crossing-over, nomenclature, application
5. Molecular structure of HLA region (class I HLA region, central region, class II HLA region), HLA class I and class II genes (structure, role), HLA class I and class II molecules (structure, role)
6. Methods for HLA gene and molecule typing and HLA antibody detection
7. Non-classical HLA molecules (HLA-E, -F, -G), role, application
8. NK cells and KIR receptors (role, applications, nomenclature, importance)
9. Transplantation reaction, host versus graft reaction, graft versus host reaction
10. Kidney transplantation (immune reaction, limitating factors, impact of HLA genes compatibility between recipient and donor on transplantation outcome, organ allocation)
11. Transplantation of other solid organs (liver, heart, pancreas)
12. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (immune reaction, limitating factors, donor choice and probability of finding a donor, advantages and disadvantages of different hematopoietic cells sources)
13. Chimerism: application, importance, prognostic value, methods of detection

SEMINARS:
Each student will get a scientific article from the transplantation immunology field, which the student will present to his colleagues in the form of a short lecture. The article selection will be made in such way that the latest developments and accomplishments in the transplantation immunology field are presented.
