Description:
Absorption spectroscopic methods for characterization of biomolecules and their application in clinical chemistry (biomolecules as chromophores). Fluorescence spectroscopy (application on farmaceutical and clinical samples, biomolecules, FRET, FISH, green fluorescent protein). Atomic spectroscopy (application on biomolecules and clinical samples). The application of nuclear magnetic resonance for medical diagnosis and determination of a biomolecules structure (proteins, nucleic acids, protein-DNA/RNA complexes, oligosaccharides). Use of mass spectrometry for determining the elemental composition of a real samples- vitamins, steroids, drugs). The application of electroanalytical methods for medical biochemistry (biosensors and an ion-selective electrodes in clinical chemistry chemical tests for various components: ions (K, Na, Ca), enzymes or substrates (urease, creatine kinase or glucose, cholesterol), gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide). The determination of amino acids by colorimetric, fluorimetric, microbiological and enzyme methods. Methods for purifying and determination nucleic acids and proteins (ultracentrifugation, chromatography, electrophoresis). Separation and analysis methods of Carbohydrates and lipids (chromatography, enzyme and colorimetric methods, electrophoresis).
The application of immunochemical methods for drugs, hormones, allergens, vitamins and ksenobiotics. Enzyme-immunoassays methods in clinical chemistry (use of enzymes as reagens or therapeutic compounds in medical diagnosis, ELISA).

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- understand and apply statistics in the evaluation of analytical data obtained in the detection and quantification of biomolecules
- describe procedures used for sampling and sample preparations for analysis
- understand the principle and applications of various chromatographic methods (planar and column liquid chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, adsorption-, ion-exchange-, size-exclusion-, affinity-, partition- and gas-chromatography)
- understand the basis and use of electrophoresis and centrifugation in studies of proteins and DNA
- understand the principle and applications of absorption methods, fluorometry and of atomic spectroscopy
- understand the principle and applications of nuclear magnetic resonance for medical diagnosis and for structure-determination of a biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, protein-DNA/RNA complexes, etc.
- formulate the use of mass spectrometry for the identification of a biomolecules, e.g. of proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins, steroids, drugs)
- explain the application of electrochemical methods (potentiometry, biosensors, surface plasmon resonance and ion-selective electrodes) for the study biomolecules
- understand the use of biosensors and their interaction with active molecular species for the measurement of various analytes
- formulate the use of enzymes in medical diagnosis (ELISA) and enzyme-immunoassays
- explain the principle and applications of immunological methods and immunoassays for the measurement of biomolecules such as drugs, hormones, allergens, vitamins, and xenobiotics
- apply acquired knowledge to select an analytical method adequate for the determination of a given biomolecule
