Date: Thursday, 15/10/2026
Time: 15:15
Place: F08

Neutrinos at the origin of matter in the Universe?
(Juraj Klarić - PMF, Zagreb)

The Standard Model of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet it cannot explain why the Universe contains matter rather than equal amounts of matter and antimatter, what dark matter is made of, or why neutrinos have mass. Remarkably, a minimal extension, adding three “right-handed” partners to the known neutrinos, may address all three puzzles at once. Testing this idea requires following quantum particles out of equilibrium through the hot, expanding early Universe, a problem that resisted precise treatment for decades. I will describe how recent progress has turned this scenario into a sharp, falsifiable prediction: if it is correct, the new particles must lie within reach of near-future experiments. Beyond this minimal scenario, I will discuss how the same theoretical tools shed light on other open questions about the early Universe, from how matter was created as inflation ended to the gravitational waves this epoch may have left behind.
