ECTS: 5.0
Lecturers in charge: dr. sc. Marijan Ahel
Lecturers: dr. sc. Marijan Ahel - Practicum
Take exam: Studomat
English level:

In agreement with the students enrolled in the course, the lecturer will provide as many teaching elements in English as possible, or in both English and Croatian for mixed groups (i.e., bilingual teaching materials and bilingual exams). Level 2 also includes additional individual consultations with foreign students (as in Level 1) for the teaching elements which will be held in Croatian.

Description:
Introduction to environmental organic chemistry ? definition and relationship to other disciplines of science. Basic structures and nomenclature in organic chemistry; anthropogenic vs. natural compounds; definition, classification and major types of pollutants. A brief introduction to analytical chemistry of organic pollutants. Thermodynamics and molecular interactions. Main geochemical processes, which determine behaviour and distribution of organic pollutants in the environment and their relationship in real systems. Transport and transfer of pollutants ? diffusion and advection. Distribution of organic pollutants between aquatic systems and atmosphere. Distribution of organic pollutants in aquatic systems ? solubility and partition coefficients. Distribution of organic pollutants in aquatic organisms ? bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Exchange of pollutants between solid-phase and water ? sorption and geoaccumulation. Chemical transformations of pollutants. Photochemical tranformation of pollutants. Biological transformations of pollutants. Modelling in organic geochemistry of pollutants. Geochemical processes and environmental risk assessment.

Learning outcomes :

Comprehension of the anthropogenic impacts on the environment with the emphasis on chemical contamination
Familiarization with the analytical determination of organic micropollutants
Comprehension of individual biogeochemical processes and their role in the environment
Comprehension of the processes which participate in the transport and transfer of pollutants advection and diffusion
Comprehension of partitioning processes that lead to geoaccumulation and bioaccumulation
Familiarization with the most important transformation processes chemical, photochemical and biological transformation
Familiarization with the models for forecasting environmental behaviour of pollutants and assessment of environmental risk
