Description:
COURSE GOALS: Introducing students to existing knowledge about possible physics beyond the standard model (BSM) of elementary particle physics

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1.3 demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the most important physics theories (logical and mathematical structure, experimental support, described physical phenomena)
1.4 describe the state of the art in - at least- one of the presently active physics specialities
5. LEARNING SKILLS

5.1 search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)
LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
After successfully finishing the course, student will be able
1. to describe the reasons for belief in BSM physics (neutrino masses, dark matter etc.)
2. to describe problems of the standard model
3. to describe the most important attempts to extend the standard model (unification of forces, supersymmetry etc.)
4. to make assessment of newest results in research of BSM physics

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1. Discovery of new phenomena and statistics
2. Neutrino masses - experiments
3. Neutrino masses - theory, see-saw mechanism
4. Dark matter and dark energy
5. Baryogenesis, inflation and problems of flavour physics
6. Hierarchy problem
