Atomic Physics Lab

Code: 63030
ECTS: 14.0
Lecturers in charge: doc. dr. sc. Vedran Đerek
Take exam: Studomat
Load:

1. komponenta

Lecture typeTotal
Laboratory exercises 60
* Load is given in academic hour (1 academic hour = 45 minutes)
Description:
COURSE GOALS:
Students will execute selected laboratory experiments in atomic and molecular physics and gain insight in basic experimental methods and techniques in this field. The knowledge acquired in the course Atomic and Molecular Physics will be broadened by experimental work on selected topics.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
* perform experiments using basic techniques, as well as to describe, analyze and critically evaluate experimental data
* work with a high degree of autonomy, even accepting responsibilities in project planning and in the managing of structures
* present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
* search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
* independently use some basic atomic and molecular physics instruments
* independently analyse the data from measurements, interpret them and evaluate the errors
* present the result of the work in the form of scientific report

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1. Quartz prism spectrometer: analysis of atomic spectra in UV;
2. Comparator and densitometer: principles of identification of atomic lines;
3. Grating spectrometer: analysis of atomic line shapes;
4. Michelson interferometer: measurement of wavelength of coherent light sources.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Preparations for the laboratory exercises. Execution of the laboratory exercises. Data analysis, discussion, written report.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
Evaluation of each segment of given assignments.
Literature:
  1. W. Demtoroeder, Laser Spectroscopy, Springer-Verlag, Berlin,1996.
  2. A.P.Thorne, U. Litzen, S, Johansson, Spectrophysics, Springer Verlag, Berlin 1999.
