"Looking at the Universe in Colour: Commissioning and the first results of MUSE"
Petak, 21.11.2014., 14:15h, F-201

Abstract:
Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, MUSE, is a next generation
instrument installed on ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. It is an
integral-field unit which allows for simultaneous spectroscopic
observations of a field of 1x1 arc minute in size, providing more than
90 000 spectra in the wavelength range of 4650 - 9300 Angstroms. MUSE
was installed and commissioned at the beginning of the year, the
science verification observations took place during the summer, and
from October 2014 MUSE has been offered to the community. In this
talk, I will describe the instrument and present some of the
commissioning observations, which show the high image quality of MUSE
and its versatility of usage. I will focus on the very first results
with MUSE, including the observations of the Hubble Deep Field South,
the discovery of a kinematic substructure in the central galaxy in the
Virgo Cluster, and evidence for the counter-rotation in another giant
elliptical.
