COURSE CONTENT

1. Introduction to analytical chemistry. Qualitative and quantitative methods. Classical and instrumental analytical methods.
2. Introduction in analytical atomic spectrometry (methods, instrumental characteristics, analytical signal)
3. Spectrometric data processing and interpretation of analytical results (statistical tests; quality control)
4. Applications of atomic spectrometry methods (AAS, ICP, XRF) in analysis of soil, water, air and biological samples
5. Advanced techniques in environmental analytical chemistry (coupled systems in elemental speciation)
6. Analytical issues in risk assessment and environmental regulations
7. Interaction of electromagnetic radiation and matter
8. Basics and application of molecular spectroscopy (UV, IR, Raman, NMR, MS)
9. Spectral interpretation
10. Constitution of analytical instruments
11. Sampling (sample, planning, procedures).
12. Sample preparation for analysis (extraction from liquid, solid and gas samples; dissolution of solids).
13. Chromatography (gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, instruments, separation mechanisms).
14. Trace and ultra-trace analysis by chromatographic methods (analysis of organic pollutants, pesticides, medicaments, drugs, etc.).

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. To classify instrumental methods according to interaction of radiation and matter.
2. To explain principal characteristics of quantitative analytical measurement (detection limit, response, precision, accuracy).
3. To describe analytical characteristics of selected atomic spectrometry methods.
4. To describe examples of atomic spectrometry applications in environmental samples analysis (soil, water, air, biological materials).
5. To explain fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation and interactions with matter
6. To understand basics of molecular spectroscopy and its application in environmental analysis
7. To understand basic constitution of analytical instruments
8. To explain sample and sampling.
9. To list and explain methods for sample preparations.
10. To explain chromatographic methods and their application.
