Description:
Introduction: aggregation states, interfaces, colloids. Colloidal state: solubility, nucleation, kinetics of crystal growth and dissolution, characterization of colloids. Dynamics: Brownian motion, diffusion, sedimentation, ultracentifuge. Adsorption: equilibrium, empirical isotherms. Electrical properties of surfaces and colloids: interfacial reactions, electrical interfacial layer, interfacial equilibrium, electrokinetics. Colloid stability: interactions between particles, kinetics of aggregation. Surface active agents: solubility, micellization, emulsions. Applied colloid chemistry.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After passing the exam student should be able to:
Classify and describe basic types of colloids and explain their properties.
Explain the equilibrium processes in colloid systems
Describe the motion of colloid particles (sedimentation, diffusion, ...)
Explain the parameters influencing the colloid stability and aggregation kinetics.
Derive the thermodynamic equilibrium constants of surface complexation.
Describe and explain the electrical interfacial layer.
Describe and explain the specificities of polyelectrolyte adsorption.
Choose adequate technique and method for surface characterization of colloids.
Describe the properties of surfactants and their self organization.
