Description:
COURSE CONTENT:
Introduction: importance of heterocycles. Aromatic heterocycles: structural types; nomenclature, reactivity. Tautomerism of heteroaromatic compounds. Nonaromatic heterocycles: structural types; nomenclature, reactivity. Anomeric effect. Ring synthesis. Cyclization reactions. Cycloaddition reactions Six-membered ring compounds with one heteroatom. Pyridines. Quinolines and isoquinolines. Five-membered ring compounds with one heteroatom. Pyrroles. Furans. Thiophenes. Indoles and related compounds. Benzofurans. Six-membered ring compounds with two or more heteroatoms. Pyrimidines and purines. Diazines, triazines and tetrazines. Oxazines and thiazines. Five-membered ring compounds with two or more heteroatoms. Imidazoles. Pyrazoles, triazoles and tetrazoles. Oxazoles and thiazoles and their benzo derivatives. Purines. Heterocycles in Biochemistry and Medicine.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- to be able to described structures of heterocyclic compounds and explain their physical and chemical properties;
- to compare the structure of heterocyclic compounds and their chemical reactivity;
- to implement fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry in planning of synthesis of heterocycles;
- to explain main reaction mechanisms in synthesis of compounds;
- to have a working knowledge of a set of modern synthetic methods related to the total synthesis of bioactive heterocyclic compounds;
- to present adequate skills in technical writing and oral presentations.
