Description:
COURSE GOALS: To get the students introduced with the basic experimental techniques of organic chemistry including synthesis, isolation, purification and identification of organic compounds. To train students to work independently in the laboratory and to handle correctly organic chemicals.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Students will be able:
1. to properly handle organic chemicals,
2. to plan organic synthesis and isolation of components from natural materials,
3. to isolate organic compounds from the reaction mixture by extraction,
4. to purify organic compounds isolated from the reaction mixture by column chromatography, distillation and recrystallization,
5. to identify organic compounds by thin layer chromatography (Rf value calculation) and infrared spectroscopy (recording of IR spectrum for liquid and solid samples and their assignment).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1. Isolation of caffeine,
2. Column chromatography and thin layer chromatography,
3. Oxidation,
4. Reduction,
5. IR Spectroscopy,
6. Esterification.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Preliminary exam before every laboratory practice, final exam, written reports.

Written preliminary exams and final exam.
