Description:
Course content:

Acquaintance of students with the issue of interrelationship between nature and man in general, and especially through corresponding periods during the entire Holocene. Understanding the types of changes in the material world but also in the world of ideas and worldviews (understanding of nature and understanding of the relationship of man to the rest of the natural world). Worldview as the basis of man's relationship with nature: action, politics and their consequences. Introducing students to the main stages in the accessibilty, amount and type of energy used, and the size and types of changes in the environment.

Topics:
1. Starting points: states of change - way of life / economy. Population and degradation? Accessibility and supply of energy.
2. Access to energy and stages of technological evolution/development of humankind (gatherers/hunters; early agriculture; industrial period; post-industrial economies).
3. Development of the scientific field and research; the history of thought about the relationship between man and the natural world. Differences with regard to time, space, culture and religion.
4. Research topics and approaches. Environmental history in Croatia.
5. Historical and environmental regionalization of Europe. Basic settings: advantages; limitations; types of change; risks. Characteristic relict landscapes of basic development phases in Europe (hunter-gatherer, traditional-agricultural, industrial, post-industrial).
6. Environmental management: protection, restoration, reconstruction.
7. Environmental restoration, green urbanism and postmodern landscapes.
8. Projects of urban environmental restoration (Seoul; restoration - reconstruction?)
9. Hundertwasser and the ecological program of urban reforestation
10. The main periods of environmental history: The period of gatherers and hunters.
11. Pre-industrial agriculture.
12. Industrial period.
13. Post-industrial period.
14. Globally important topics.
15. Contemporary issues and discourses; media analysis (professionalism, advocacy, determinism, degradation narratives...)

Learning outcomes:

Understanding the cause-and-effect relationship and the relationship between man and nature.
Understanding and acquiring knowledge about the connection between different (increasing) energy consumption and impact on the natural world through different periods of technological evolution of humankind.
Understanding the connection of (different) worldviews with concrete actions and policies towards nature, i.e. the environment, and their consequences.
