Lana Slavuj Borčić was born in 1981 in Rijeka. After completing the Gymnasium second school, she graduated from the study of geography at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb in 2007, and enrolled for the postgraduate study programme in the same year. In 2011 she defended her Doctoral dissertation entitled “The quality of life in an urban environment – case study of the City of Rijeka” under the supervision of Professor Laura Šakaja. She has been employed at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science since March 2008, and was appointed senior research assistant in 2011, research associate in 2013, senior research associate in 2020, assistant professor in 2017 and associate professor in 2023.
She has been involved in a number of scientific projects. She is currently participating in the international research project Resilient Rules - Evolution of institutional diversity in a changing world: Finding solutions in resilient agricultural systems funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the Horizon Europe programme, as a research collaborator. The project focuses primarily on studying the evolution of institutional diversity in agricultural systems around the world and aims to understand how this diversity contributes to long-term resilience in the face of global changes.
Her research interests focus primarily on resilience and governance of the local common pool resources (rural and urban), sustainable commoning practices, urban agriculture, local food systems, short food supply chains, and urban quality of life. She has published 19 scientific papers and presented at 17 international and 4 domestic scientific conferences. She has published independently or co-authored scientific papers in influential international journals: Social and Cultural Geography (Q1), Geoforum (Q1) and Journal of Rural Studies (Q1). She has peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journals (eg. Social & Cultural Geography, Geografiska Annaler, Series B: Human Geography, Landscape Research, Journal of Settlements and Spatial Planning) and in domestic scientific journals.
At the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science she teaches the courses: Research Methods in Human Geography, Introduction to Scientific Research, Cultural Geography, Geography of Cultural Offer, Croatian Islands – Sociogeographic Themes. She participates in teaching two methodology courses in the Doctoral study of Geography: Space, Region, Environment, Landscape. She is Head of the Heritage and Tourism module in the graduate programme in Geography.
She is a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal Hrvatski Geografski Glasnik, member of editorial board of the professional journal Geografski horizont, a member of The International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC), a member of the Croatian Geographic Society.
