Learning outcomes
1 Achieve the level of understanding the relationship of scientific methods to research outputs.
2 The ability of the student to discuss the evaluation of scientific articles and journals. Training for successful implementation of research within the Graduate thesis
3 Acquiring knowledge about the scientific method and experimental design.
4 Understanding the links between statistical and mathematical methods and design of experiment.
5 Introduction to scientific communication and to publishing research results.
6 Acquiring skills for evaluation of scientific work, article, journal and scientists.
Experimental design
1 The hypothesis or question answer model (1 lesson) hypothesis, the role of hypotheses in an experimental design; shortcomings of hypothesis: restrictive and too general hypothesis, an alternative system of questions and answers.
2 Variability, replicatin, repetition, control (2 lessons) variability in biological research, noise of the experiment, variability , standard deviation, number of replication and repetition; role of preliminary research and prestatistic for a successful outcome of the experiment , the selection of controls , balanced and unbalanced experimental design,
3 Classification , sampling , aliasing ( 1 lesson ) classification as a method of reducing the " noise " of the experiment; types of sampling, sample and subsamples ; controls
4 Ethics in research ( 1 lesson ) ethics to the institution , colleagues , research ethics ( how to treat human or animal experimental material )
5 Methods of evaluation of scientific articles ( 2 lessons ) Types of primary and secondary sources; bibliographic citation , full text base ; introduction to the Web of Science , SCOPUS , JCR ; concepts : impact factor , hindex , G index ,
Scientific communication
6 Elements of scientific articles ( 2 lessons ) a style of writing in science , tenses , active and passive form the application through all the chapters of the scientific article
7 Types of illustration ( 1 lesson ) overview of illustration and criteria for their selection,
8 Citing references ( 1 lesson ) citation styles, software packagee, creating database of articles
9 Publishing of research results ( 1 lesson ) rules for publishing results of scientific research, communication with the editorial board
10 Scientific meetings ( 1 lesson ) ways of presenting at conferences , tips for making quality oral presentations and posters
11 Writing a thesis
12 CV and motivation letter ( 1 lesson ) style of writing in science , tenses , active and passive form the application through all the chapters of graduate work ; application threads ; diploma exam; evaluators, ways and styles of writing CVs and motivation letter
Seminars are organized in a way to follow lectures and are based on solving the problems of the above topics :
1 Seminar 1 ( 1 lesson ): Disadvantages of hypothesis on examples of limited and too broad hypotheses, hypotheses as the backbone of the planning of the experiment . Students noticed how bad hypothesis reflects the wrong experiment and experimental design, which leads to the wrong conclusion and outcome
2 Seminar 2 ( two lessons): Resolve examples of experiments with variable and less variable factors. Simulation comparison of individual control and experimental sample in order to estimate the sample size
3 Seminar 3 ( 1 lesson ): Example of classification on the human population within a few set of hypotheses / questions .
4 Seminar 4 ( 2 lessons ): Examples of designing several experiments related to the same question, the consequences of poor design on outcome through which students perceive the importance of the number of individuals ,repetition, sampling and preliminary research .
5 Seminar 5 ( 2 lessons ): Evaluation of sampling and subsampling through several examples
6 Seminar 6 ( 1 lesson ): Exercise on illustrations ; selection of illustrations, spotting errors in the finished illustrations
7 Seminar 7 ( 2 lessons ): Searching the databases ( Web of Science , Scopus )
