All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
LECTURES
1. Theoretical and practical basis of species protection, extinction risk estimation, Red lists
2. Strictly protected species, active methods of species protection, endangered and protected Vertebrate species in Croatia
3. Protected areas based on national and international legislation, IUCN categories of protected areas, establishment and management of protected areas
4. Networks of protected areas, Natura 2000 ecological network, assessment of admissibility of human activities to environment
5. Protection of Croatian Vertebrates through protected areas and conservation of habitats
6. NP Velebit, NP Northern Velebit, NP Risnjak, NP Paklenica, NP Dinara
7. NP Biokovo, NP Krka, NP Plitvice lake, NP Žumberak-Samoborsko gorje, NP Medvednica
8. NP Učka, PP Lonjsko polje, NP Kopački rit, NP Papuk, Red book of vascular flora
9. NP Brijuni, NP Telašćica, NP Kornati, Croatian plant endemism, invasive plants
10. NP Mljet, PP Lastovo islands, NP Vransko lake, basic features of Croatian flora
11. Diversity of invertebrates on a global scale and in the Republic of Croatia
12. Impediments in the invertebrate conservation, species conservation status assessment, problems in the conservation of rare and little-known species
13. Threats to selected invertebrate groups in terrestrial, fresh water and marine ecosystems of the Republic of Croatia
14. Endemic invertebrate species, biodiversity hotspots, National Classification of Habitats, threatened and rare habitat types in the Republic of Croatia
15. Monitoring of threatened species included in the Habitats Directive, defining pressures and threats, determining future prospects of the species

PRACTICUM:
1. Extinction risk estimation following IUCN criteria and categories
2. Population viability analysis
3. Preparation of the Expert basis for permanent protection
4. Quantification of the biodiversity 'hot spots'
5. Participation in certain aspects of conservation projects
6. Protection of Natura 2000 important plant species in the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science, Zagreb
7. Research of seed germination ecology of endemic and endangered plant species
8. Use of the Flora Croatica Database in professional and / or scientific work
9. & 10. Student discussion with employees of Nature park (Medvednica) and / or manager of current projects in protected areas (Biom, JU Maksimir...) + field trip to protected area in/near Zagreb city
11. Determining the protected area size in the Dubravica bog (Hrvatsko zagorje) using GIS applications
12..-13. Using internet databases (GBIF, Biologer, etc.), georeferencing old literature data, creating distribution maps for selected species
14.-15. Gap and population size analysis for selected species listed in the Habitats Directive, population trend monitoring

SEMINAR:
Students have to write an essay dealing with chosen topics on habitat and species preservation. An essay has to be presented. Work on a seminar includes:
1. Choice of the topic
2. Use of web basis that are oriented on scientific publication, search for older literature
3. Analysis of available data, critical reading
4. Use of correct form of an essay, correct referencing
5. Preparation of presentation, use of appropriate tools
6. Presentation of seminar in front of teachers and students
7. Discussion on seminars, evaluation of communication skills, assessment of student's achievements
