Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To introduce students to radiation, absorption, reflection, and scattering processes in the Earth-atmosphere system.

COURSE CONTENT:
Radiation processes of the Sun and the Earth. Extinction of solar radiation in the atmosphere. Measurement and estimation of direct, scattered, and total solar radiation. Radiation modeling.

COURSE SYLLABUS:
1. Introduction. Basic concepts and definitions.
2. Laws of black body radiation.
3. Corpuscular and electromagnetic solar radiation. Solar constant.
4. Daily and hourly amounts of radiated solar energy on horizontal and inclined surfaces.
5. Gases in the atmosphere that absorb solar radiation.
6. Scattering of solar radiation (Rayleigh and Mie).
7. Bouguert-Lambert law. Relative optical mass.
8. Aerosols in the atmosphere.
9. Extinction on water vapor.
10. Instruments for measuring components of solar, terrestrial, and atmospheric radiation and insolation.
11. Optical filters. Pyrheliometric scales.
12. Diffuse radiation. Polarization.
13. Statistical and deterministic methods and models for determining solar radiation components.
14. Albedo. Longwave radiation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere.
15. Repetition of the entire material.

LEARNING METHOD:
Listening to lectures and exercises, studying notes and available literature. Deriving equations and solving problems through exercises.

TEACHING METHODS:
Lectures with discussion. Analysis of examples. Exercises with tasks of deriving equations and solving numerical problems. Presentations of seminar papers.

MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT METHOD:
Interviews, written and oral exams.

SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS:
Regular attendance (attendance at more than 2/3 of the classes). Seminar paper.

EXAM METHOD:
Written (those who successfully pass all interviews may be exempted from the written part of the exam) and oral.
