OUTLINE OF COURSE/MODULE CONTENT
Theoretical approaches and the typology of rurality
Discourses and approaches to rurality. Implications of selecting a theoretical approach to rurality for the research procedure (example: functional, politico-economical and concept of the social construction of rurality). Example of creating the typology of the rural and urbanised settlements in Croatia. Method: aggregative and disaggregative approaches in the typology of space. Selection of the variables. Multivariate analysis (factor and cluster analysis in creating the spatial typology). GIS use in creating the typology of a space.
Rural space: transformation, development and planning extra-urban areas
Research encompasses the general characteristics of rural area (discourses, definitions, models and separation criteria), the function of rural areas, factors of rural area transformation under conditions of modernisation and global processes, the population of rural areas, restructuring population density, changes in the rural economy, environment and landscape, functional organisation of rural areas and their role in regional development, typisation of rural areas, and planning their sustainable development. Research shall be based on cadastral, cartographic and statistical sources, augmented by the results of original research (mapping, polling), by the analytical synthesis method (comparative analysis and developmental indicator synthesis), modelling of development and integral (sectoral and spatial) planning of sustainable development of rural areas.
Suburbanisation
Models of the relation between the city and its surrounding area. Research into the suburbanisation process on the example of the Zagreb urban region. Methods: analysis of statistical data. Polling (drawing up questions, sample selection, direct filling in of questionnaires, uploading and processing of data in the SPSS programme). Cartographic visualisation of research results and drafting of thematic maps.
Transformation in the rural-urban fringe
Analysis of the processes of: suburbanisation, satellitisation, daily migration, central function in the periurban settlements, etc. Transformation of the landscape in the rural-urban fringe. Research methodology: field research, mapping and polling, processing and analysis of statistical data, analysis of cartographic images. Marginal areas in the system of urban regions.
Tourism and recreation in urban and rural areas
The spatial implications of tourism and recreation in cities and rural areas – physiognomic, economic, socio-cultural, environmental. Tourism on rural small holdings. Case study: tourism and recreation as a spatial transformation factor in Island of Krk settlements. Tourism and recreation in protected areas near to and within the city – case study: Medvednica Nature Park, Maksimir Park. Research Methods: statistical analysis, direct polling method, in-depth interview method, visualisation of spatial data with the aid of thematic cartographic displays.
Second home tourism in local communities
The concept of research into second home tourism in the receptive second home areas. Physiogonomical, economic, socio-cultural and environmental influences and the consequences of weekend cottage tourism in the local communities – case study of the Island of Krk – the Malinska settlement and Dobrinj district. Methodology of statistical monitoring of secondary recreational housing – examples from local and foreign sources. Research Methods: statistical analysis, direct polling method, in-depth interview method, visualisation of spatial data with the aid of thematic cartographic displays.
