Development of technology and discovery of stable femtosecond (fs) lasers that emit pulses with subpicosecond time duration have opened up new possibilities in ultrafast science. Concepts and methodologies inherent to ultrafast science influenced in an exciting way development of chemistry, biology, physics, and other areas of research, such as materials science, electrical engineering and telecommunications. The course will cover topics related to the generation of ultrashort fs pulses together with their temporal and spectral characterization. Because of its properties in a complementary time and frequency domains, femtosecond lasers have enabled breakthroughs in research ultrafast temporal dynamics as well as in precision spectroscopy, while advances in nonlinear and multidimensional optical techniques led to the application of fs lasers in micromachining of materials, microscopy and in creation if attopulses.
