Description:
Within the course students will become familiar with the basic physical phenomena related to excitation of atoms with laser light. Description of laser-atom interaction will be based on the density matrix formalism and the optical Bloch equations, with specific examples/illustrations presented through the numerical simulations. The following topics will be covered: 1. Description of an atomic state using the density matrix; 2. Optical Bloch equations; 3. Two-level atom; 4. Rabi oscillations; 5. Atomic spectral line broadening; 6. Absorption and emission of light; 7. Optical pumping; 8. Coherent population trapping (CPT); 9. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT); 10. Autler-Townes splitting; 11. Excitation of atoms with ultrashort pulses; 12. Excitation of atoms with the optical frequency comb.
