Description:
COURSE GOALS: The main goal of this course is to give students the basic knowledge about energy sources, energy forms and energy transformations. Furthermore students will learn about energy production, consumption and reserves on the local and the global scale, while understanding the physical basis of the various energy sources and the technologies used for their exploitation. They will also learn about the efficiency in energy transformations and energy consumption as well as the socioeconomic aspects of energy needs. The students will get introduced to basics facts about the impact of energy transformation on the environment and about the basic idea of sustainable growth.

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
By completing this course, students will be able to:
1. describe quantitatively energy production and consumption at the local and the global level,
2. describe quantitatively the efficiency of various energy transformations,
3. describe qualitatively the basic principles of operation of different types of electric power plants,
4. describe qualitatively the effects of energy transformations on environment,
5. autonomously and critically use relevant sources of public and expert information,
6. autonomously produce a written report on a selected topic,
7. autonomously prepare and give a presentation on a selected topic.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Two hours is devoted to each the following topics:
* Work, energy, power
* Primary energy forms
* Energy production and consumption in Croatia and worldwide
* Reserves of energy resources
* Energy from fossile fuels
* Nuclear energy
* Sustainable energy sources
* Electricity production
* Energy transfer and storage
* Net energy gain and energy intensity
* Energy efficiency
* Impacts of energy transformations on environment
* Green-house gasses and global warming
* Raw materials and waste management
* Sustainable growth

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Students are required to attend the course on a regular basis (at least 70%). During the semester the student are required to write a seminar report and make an oral presentation on a selected topic.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
Students are graded by the quality of the written seminar (60% of the grade) and the quality of the given oral presentation (40% of the grade) on the selected topic.
The written seminar is graded by the knowledge demonstrated on the topic, by correct use and interpretation of the presented data and results, use of expert literature, clarity of the presented content, such as graphs and tables, and clarity and conciseness of the text. The oral presentation is graded by the knowledge demonstrated about the topic, clarity of the presentation to the audience and quality of the answers to the questions asked by the audience (consisting of other students and the instructor).
