COURSE GOALS: Through lectures students will be introduced in the principles of nuclear fission, energy gain in nuclear fission process, moderation of neutrons in a reactor, diffusion of neutrons in a reactor, reactor control. By solving exercises they will gain basic skills in the calculations in this field.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
* formulate, discuss and explain the basic laws of physics including mechanics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics
* demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the most important physics theories (logical and mathematical structure, experimental support, described physical phenomena)
* evaluate clearly the orders of magnitude in situations which are physically different, but show analogies, thus allowing the use of known solutions in new problems;
* apply standard methods of mathematical physics, in particular mathematical analysis and linear algebra and corresponding numerical methods
* search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)
* remain informed of new developments and methods and provide professional advice on their possible range and applications

* understand principles of energy gain in nuclear fission and principles of chain reaction
* understand principles of neutron moderation and diffusion in nuclear reactor
* understand principles of reactor work, control, fuel burnup and safety

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: Participations at lectures and execution of given assignments.
GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS: Evaluation of written and oral exam.
