All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Compare morphological and anatomical characteristics and physiological processes within molluscs
2. Establish a connection between structure, function and behaviour of molluscs and adaptation to different environmental conditions
3. Analyse phylogenetic relationships within the phyllum Mollusca as well as the position of molluscs among other invertebrate groups
4. Explain impacts of invasive alien species of molluscs on native species, habitats and ecosystems
5. Analyse natural and anthropogenic threats to the native mollusc species
6. Discuss the importance of molluscs for human health
7. Recommend which species could be used as bioindicators and test-organisms
8. Plan molluscs farming
9. Match the methodology of molluscs collection to the needs of the research combined with determination to species level
10. Compile a malacological collection using adequate methodologies for different aspects of its use

COURSE CONTENT

LECTURES

1. Introduction to malacology.
2. Man and molluscs.
3. History of malacological research.
4. Collections of molluscs.
5. Evolution, phylogeny and systematics of molluscs.
6.- 8. Comparative morphology, anatomy and physiology of molluscs.
9. Molluscs farming methods.
10. Invasive species of molluscs.
11. Protected and threatened species of molluscs in Croatia.
12. Diseases of molluscs.
13. Ecology of molluscs.
14. Molluscs behavior.
15. Molluscs as bioindicators and test-organisms.

EXERCISES

Exercises are organized in the way that, instead of one lesson per week, two hour lessons are held during half of the semester.

Sampling and determination methods in malacology.
Basics of conchology.
Determination of freshwater snails and bivalves
Malacological collections: preservations and preparations.
Visiting the Croatian Natural History Museum, presentation of the malacological collections and get acquainted with the work of museum curators.
