All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
Learning outcomes
After they finish the course and pass the exam, the students will be able to:
1. recognize the importance of soil as a natural resource, and know which are the multiple roles of soil in the environment
2. explain factors and processes of soil formation
3. asses soil quality (given the physical, chemical, and biological soil properties)
4. interpret the results of soil laboratory analyses and use these interpretations for soil ameliorations
5. classify soils into the appropriate units of the Croatian system for soil taxonomy

Lectures (30 hours)
Pedology is a natural science discipline that studies soil, as one of the most important and only conditionally renewable resources.
1. Introduction - definition and development of pedology, importance of soils in the environment
2. Factors of soil formation: parent material, climate, relief, organisms and time
3. Processes of soil formation: weathering, decomposition of organic matter and formation of humus, translocations, and specific pedogenetic processes
4. Soil morphology as the result of the simultaneous influences of both soil formation factors and soil formation processes
5. Soild, liquid, and gaseous soil phases
6. Basic physical soil features and their analytical determination
7. Basic chemical soil features and their analytical determination
8. Basic biologcal soil features
9. Principles of soil classifications
10. Classification of soils in Croatia
11. Assessment of the usage suitability for the most widespread Croatian soils

1. Soil momentary moisture
2. Soil capacity for water
3. Soil bulk density
4. Soil particle density
5. Soil total porosity
6. Soil capacity for air
7. Soil particle size distribution
8. Soil aggregates stability
9. Total content of soil carbonates
10. Soil pH
11. Quantity of lime for soil calcification
12. Humus content
13. Humus quality
14. Capacity and saturation of the soil adsorption complex
