All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
SYLLABUS:
LECTURES:
1. Position of protists in classification of living world according to current classification systems. Cellular organization of protists.
2. Morphology and physiology of heterotrophic protists (protozoa); locomotion, receptors, orientation in their environment, feeding and osmoregulation in protozoa.
3. Morphogenesis and development, life cycles and distribution of protozoa; classification of protozoa.
4. Flagellated and amoeboid protozoa (structure, diversity, life cycles, parasites in humans).
5. Apicomplexa and Ciliophora (structure, diversity, life cycles, apicomplexan parasites in humans).
6. Introductory lecture on algae (phototrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic protists, evolution, thallus types, reproduction)
7. Algae in biogeochemical processes, food webs and taxonomy of algae (morphology and molecular phylogeny)
8. Cyanobacteria (structure, diversity, life cycles, biogeography)
9. Endosymbiosis - Glaucophyta and Chlorarachnophyta
10. Red algae (structure, diversity, life cycles, biogeography)
11. Green algae (structure, diversity, life cycles, biogeography)
12. Cryptophytes, Haptophytes (structure, diversity, life cycles, biogeography)
