Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The aim of the course is to describe and understand the function and organization of components of photosynthetic apparatus in relation to structure, as well as role of regulatory mechanisms and their response to endogenous and environmental signals. The objective is also to inform students about the results of new research in the field of photosynthesis. The aim of practical work is to learn some of laboratory methods used in research of photosynthesis.

COURSE CONTENT:
Through the latest knowledge in the field of photosynthesis research the course teaches students about the function of components of photosynthetic apparatus in relation to structure, as well as regulatory mechanisms and their response to endogenous and external signals

LECTURES
1.-3. Molecular organization of thylakoid membranes: photosynthetic pigments, photosystems, electron transfer chain.
4.-5. Regulations in the process of photosynthesis.
6. Regulation of nuclear gene transcription by chloroplast signals.
7. Import of proteins into the chloroplast.
8- 13. Photosynthesis under stress conditions: photoinhibition, influence of temperature, lack of water, increased salinity, presence of heavy metals and herbicides.
14. - 15. Evolution of the photosystem.

PRACTICAL WORK:
1.-4. Theory and discussion of methods and protocols used in the research of photosynthesis based on recent scientific papers. Students work on a given topic and present it as a 15-minute lecture.
5. Basic operation principle of a measurement instruments used in photosynthesis research.
6.-7. Students independently set up an experiment to investigate the effect of the stress factor on the process of photosynthesis
8.-9. Preparation of plant material and measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence by saturation pulse method and OJIP
10.-11. Extraction and separation of photosynthetic pigments by high-performance liquid chromatography
12.-13. Extraction of proteins and their separation by electrophoresis and immunochemical detection of some proteins involved in photosynthesis
14.-15. Statistical analysis and interpretation of the results.
