Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The objective of the course Viruses and Subviral Pathogens is to: i) Expand the knowledge on viruses acquired in the mandatory basic microbiology course at the undergraduate level, through selected, engaging topics in virology and subviral pathogen research; ii) develop the ability to integrate knowledge acquired in other courses into virological contexts; iii) foster critical thinking on virology-related topics in public discourse; iv) enhance students' ability to independently identify relevant scientific information, extract key scientific facts, and prepare their own presentations and short essays on selected topics.

COURSE CONTENT:
LECTURES
1) Introductory lecture, course content and evaluation rules
2) The historical significance of discoveries in virology;
3) Viruses as major players in the global ecosystem ? marine viruses and their impact on bacterial evolution;
4) Molecular biology methods for the detection and identification of viruses and subviral pathogens;
5) Subviral pathogens;
6) Pathogenesis of viral diseases in humans;
7) Oncogenic viruses, HPV;
8) Viral vaccines, interferon, and antiviral drugs;
9) Use of viruses for therapeutic purposes (phage therapy, cancer treatment, viral vectors);
10) Emergence of viral diseases;
11) Viral evolution ? origins, mechanisms of change, and their impact on the evolution of other species (endogenous viruses);
12) HIV;
13) Taxonomy and systematics of viruses;
14) The human virome;
15) The topic according to the students' preferences.
SEMINARS
In agreement with students, seminar topics related to the lecture content will be assigned. Students will write a short essay on the assigned topic and give a presentation, both of which will be considered part of the mandatory exam literature.
