Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The aim of the General chemistry 1 course is systematization of basic chemical concepts about the properties of matter at the macroscopic, particle and symbolic level and to integrate existing and new knowledge in a conceptual units.

COURSE CONTENT:
LECTURES
1-3) The components of matter, physical and chemical properties of matter, states of matter and phase changes (macroscopic level)
4-5) The fundamental chemical laws and stoichiometric terms, atomic theory and the structure of atoms
6-8) Types of chemical reactions (ionic and redox-reactions), chemical equations, stoichiometry different approaches, extent of reaction, limiting reactant
9) Gases, physical properties and laboratory preparation
10) Fundamentals of thermochemistry, enthalpy change and enthalpy of reaction, Hess' law, enthalpy diagram
11-14) Quantum theory and electronic structure of atoms, periodic table of elements, law of periodicity and properties of elementary substances
15) Systematization of the basic concepts of the course

SEMINAR (stoichiometry):
1-2) Measurement, physical quantity and units, calculus of quantities;
3) Atoms and molecules - relative and molar values;
4) Composition of matter 1 (ratio, proportions);
5-6) Elemental analysis;
7-9) Chemical equation (qualitative and quantitative meaning, stoichiometry, extent of reaction, limiting reactant);
10-11) Redox reactions (ion-charge method and oxidation number method);
12) Gas laws, equation of state of an ideal gas;
13) Thermochemistry - basic terms;
14-15) ) Composition of matter 2 (solutions, concentrations, molality, preparation of solutions of given composition, dilution of solutions).
