Basic concepts and terminology used in carbonate sedimentology. Depositional carbonate processes, primary structural elements of carbonate sediments and diagenetic processes within carbonate sediments, Environments of carbonate deposition and carbonate facies. Factors affecting carbonate production (depth, temperature, salinity, light, water energy, biological communities, and others) and accommodation potential (tectonics, climate, eustatics), Carbonate cycles, Types of carbonate platforms: Rimmed carbonate shelf, Carbonate ramp, Epic carbonate platform, Isolated carbonate platform, Submerged carbonate platform, Dynamics of carbonate platforms of the Tethys area. Evolution of the Adriatic-Dinaric carbonate platform (geotectonic setting, geodynamics, terminology), Recent carbonate platforms and their facies; Bahama Platform, Florida Carbonate Shelf, Arabian Gulf Carbonate Platform, Carbonate Platforms Through Geologic History. Evolution of the biota of carbonate platforms through the Phanerozoic.

Learning outcomes:
Familiarity with carbonate facies, field and laboratory carbonate research; Familiarity with models of carbonate platforms, carbonate cycles, and
the evolution of carbonate platforms of the Tethys area; Getting to know the environments and facies of recent carbonate platforms; Understanding the dynamics and evolution of carbonate platforms of the geological past; Getting to know the evolution of the facies of the Adriatic-Dinaric carbonate platform.
