COURSE GOALS: Through lectures students will be introduced in the principles of operations of detectors and electronics. In particular, scintillation detectors, solid state detectors, multi-wire proportional chambers and Cherenkov detectors, as well as discriminators, ADC, TDC, coincidence units and various standards NIM, CAMAC and PCI. They will acquire knowledge about methods and techniques used in measurements in nuclear and particle physics, as well as applications of these methods and techniques in other fields. Selected laboratory measurements and demonstrations will be done.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
* describe the state of the art in - at least- one of the presently active physics specialities
* identify the essentials of a process/situation and set up a working model of the same or recognize and use the existing models
* perform experiments independently using standard techniques, as well as to describe, analyze and critically evaluate experimental data
* present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
* search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)
* carry out research by undertaking a PhD
LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
* understand principles of functioning of detectors and electronics in nuclear and particle physics
* understand principles of methods and techniques of measurements in these fields
* design a new measurement in this field
* use these methods and techniques in other fields
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Interaction of radiation with matter. Ionization detectors. Semiconductor detectors. Cherenkov detectors. Signals and electronics for signal processing. Data acquisition. Specific measurements: position of the particles, time measurements, measurements of energy and momentum, particle identification. Measurements with the specific detector systems. Biological effects of radiation and radiation protection. Applications of nuclear methods and techniques in other fields.
REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: Participations at lectures and execution of given assignments.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS: Evaluation of written and oral exam.
