Description:
The course objective is to introduce students to basic concepts of nuclear reactions from both theoretical and experimental aspects. Course aims to acquirement of new knowledge and practical experience needed for research in this subject and includes presentations of contemporary results in the research subject.
Course content includes following topics: basic concepts and terms related to various types of nuclear reactions.
Direct reactions: elastic and inelastic scattering, transfer reactions of individual nucleons and clusters of nucleons, compound nucleus reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, fusion and fission reactions (fusion-fission, transfer induced fission).
Basic overview on accelerators and detectors for various reaction products (nuclei, neutrons, gamma-rays), as well as overview of most recent experimental methods used for nuclear reaction measurements, separately presented for light nuclei (A<20) and heavier nuclei reactions.
Coincident detection of several reaction products, kinematically complete measurements.
Specificity of measurements with ion beams of rare short-lived (radioactive) nuclei.
Basic nuclear reaction models developed for specific aspects of nuclear collision phenomena (from light to heavy nuclei, from periphery to central collisions, from low to high energy processes).
Collision theory, direct reaction methods, semi-classical collision theory, coupled channels concept.
Trends and prospects of nuclear reaction measurements.
Applications in interdisciplinary research and technology.
