Lecture typeTotal
Lectures 30
Seminar 15
* Load is given in academic hour (1 academic hour = 45 minutes)
Description:
COURSE GOALS: The objective of the course is to introduce students to the possibilities of experimental work concerning physics at the Faculty of Science and other nearby institutions (other parts of the University in Zagreb, Institute of Physics, Institute Ruđer Bošković, Institute for Medical Research). In addition to experimental subjects, the students are also introduced to both the basic ethical principles of scientific work and to the topic of intellectual property protection. It is expected that the course will both ease the student's choice of specialization and help them make that choice responsibly.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

1.3 demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the most important physics theories (logical and mathematical structure, experimental support, described physical phenomena)
1.4 describe the state of the art in - at least- one of the presently active physics specialities

3. MAKING JUDGEMENTS

3.2 develop a personal sense of responsibility, given the free choice of elective/optional courses
3.3 comprehend the ethical characteristics of research and of the professional activity in physics

4. COMMUNICATION SKILLS

4.2 present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
4.3 develop the written and oral English language communication skills that are essential for pursuing a career in physics

5. LEARNING SKILLS

5.1 search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)
5.2 remain informed of new developments and methods and provide professional advice on their possible range and applications

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Indicate main experimental research activities at Faculty of Science and at related institutes in the field of physics;
2. List main experimental scientific achievements in physics at Faculty of Science and at related institutes in the last five years;
3. Describe physical principles and mode of operation of experimental aparature in the visited laboratories;
4. Present results of his/her own work in a form of written report and a lecture

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Each week students get acquainted with a group of experimental methods. An expert for a specific method gives an introductory lecture about a group of methods that include his own speciality. After the lecture students visit the laboratory, where the laboratory members present current research topics, explain principles of operation and the latest achievements.
At the end of semester each student writes a seminar related to one of the visited laboratories. Students present their seminars in front of the other students.
Weekly course schedule:
1. introductory lecture
2. sample growth, preparation and basic characterization
3. structural investigations
4. transport measurements
5. magnetization measurements
6. magnetic resonances
7. surface methods
8. optical methods
9. eksperimental atomic and molecular physics
10. nuclear methods in materials research
11. positron emission tomography
12. experimental nuclear physics
13. student seminars

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Students should attend the lectures and give seminars in written and oral form.
GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
The final mark is formed on the basis of given seminars.
