MUSE at conferences in April and May 2023

The MUSE project has entered its final phase, so our goal is to present the results to domestic and international scientific audience. Project team members participated in the 33rd international scientific meeting of SETAC Europe, i.e. the 33rd European meeting of The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), which was held from April 30 to May 4, 2023. in Dublin, Ireland. It is an extremely large gathering, at which this year there were around 2,300 presenters, so it was an exceptional opportunity to present the results but also to network with a large number of scientists from various institutions around the world. We presented the results of our research, Iva Kokotović, Filip Ložek and Marina Veseli in the form of posters, and Ana Previšić in the form of an oral communication. More information is available in the Book of abstracts.

In April, we presented the results at the 4th Symposium on Freshwater Biology (SOBS) with international participation, which took place on Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. Members of the project team gave four oral presentations at the mentioned symposium, Iva Kokotović, Filip Ložek and Ana Previšić gave lectures in which they presented the results of laboratory experiments related to the effects of increased water temperature and pollution on freshwater invertebrates. Marina Veseli gave a lecture related to the results of field research with the aim of providing new knowledge about the transfer of pollutants from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems through food webs. More information is available in the Book of abstracts.

They presented outcomes of our research in poster presentations titled Bioaccumulation of Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Macrophytes“  and  „Emerging Aquatic Insects Transfer Environmental Stress Across Ecosystems“. For more information please check the book of abstracts.

Iva and Marina also participated in the 6. Faculty of Science Symposium for Doctoral Students that was held in Zagreb, Croatia. Both had oral presentations, titled „Help me out, I'm in a multistress environment!“ and „Bioaccumulation and bioamplification of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds in caddisfly Silo nigricornis“. For more information please check the book of abstracts.

Ana Previšić presented our ongoing research to the public and discussed the impacts of multiple stressors and particularly climate change on freshwater ecosystems within the online lecture held on Friday, 4 February 2022 as a part of the Centre of climate research at Faculty of Science lecture series (http://www.pmf.unizg.hr/geof/aktualnosti/novosti_za_naslovnicu?@=1mqpu). Ana also gave a short interview on the Croatian national radio that aired on Friday 4 March 2022 at 13:10 („Slušaj kako zemlja diše“, available for download at https://radio.hrt.hr/slusaonica/slusaj-kako-zemlja-dise).

Promoting our work at the Croatian national television (HRT)

Croatian national television (HRT) made a short interview with our project team members Ana Previšić and Marko Rožman.  They introduced ongoing research within the HRZZ projects MUSE (PZS-2019-02-9479) and UNDERSTANODR (IP-2018-01-2298). Interview aired on 03.02.2022. at HTV1.

visit to University Koblenz · Landau

PhD student Marina Veseli recently visited University Koblenz · Landau in Landau, Germany. She visited their microcosms and mesocosms facilities and gave a presentation on activities and research within the MUSE and UNDERSTANDOR project. The presentation was followed by a productive discussion.
Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Ralf B. Schäfer and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Mirco Bundschuh, as well as to their team members ans PhD students for hosting this meeting.

Making a video contribution for Night of Biology 2021 on multiple stressors in aquatic ecosystems

In preparation for a virtual edition of the 2021 Night of Biology (organized by the Biology Department of Zagreb’s Faculty of Science), MUSE (Ana Previšić, Marina Veseli, Iva Kokotović) and UNDERSTANDOR (Marko Rozman, Ivana Grgić, Katarina Cetinić; Ruđer Bošković Institute) combined forces to film a short informative video explaining the impact of multiple stressors (with a special focus on microplastics and pharmaceuticals) on freshwater ecosystems.

The video will be shown as part of the 12th Annual Day and Night at the Faculty of Science (https://nocbiologije.biol.pmf.unizg.hr/). We were beyond excited to be able to participate in such an inspiring project that aims to present new scientific discoveries, research, and methods to the general public in a concise, engaging, and easily understandable way!
