Lecture typeTotal
Laboratory exercises 60
* Load is given in academic hour (1 academic hour = 45 minutes)
Description:
COURSE GOALS: Students will execute selected laboratory experiments in particle physics and gain insight in some of experimental methods and techniques in this field. The knowledge acquired in the courses Elementary particle physics 1 and 2 will be broadened by experimental work on selected topics. They will independently use modern particle physics detectors and electronics in these measurements.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
* perform experiments independently using standard techniques, as well as to describe, analyze and critically evaluate experimental data
* work with a high degree of autonomy, even accepting responsibilities in project planning and in the managing of structures
* present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
* search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)
LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
* independently use some of modern particle physics detectors and electronics
* independently analyse the data from measurements, interpret them and evaluate the errors
* present the result of the work in the form of scientific report
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Radiation detection using scintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, ionization detectors (VDC). Timing and coincidence measurements. Fast electronics and data acquisition. Treatment of data and error analysis. Measurement of speed of cosmic mouns. Measurement of muon lifetime. Measurement of muon magnetic moment. Measurement of positronium lifetime.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: Preparations for the laboratory exercises. Execution of the laboratory exercises. Data analysis, discussion, written report.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS: Evaluation of each segment of given assignments.
