COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The aim of the General chemistry laboratory 1 course is to introduce basic laboratory equipment, reagents, techniques and safety measures, as well as acquiring experimentation skills, observation, measurement and interpretation of the obtained results.
COURSE CONTENT:
EXERCISES
1) Introduction of laboratory equipment and laboratory precautions;
2) Determination of mass and density of the sample;
3) Mechanical separation of mixtures (decanting and filtering);
3-4) Determination of melting point and boiling point;
5-6) Separation of mixtures based on differences in solubility (measuring molar enthalpies of salt, re-crystallization, fractional crystallization);
7-8) Separation of mixtures based on differences in vapor pressure (sublimation, distillation, vacuum distillation);
9) Preparation of solutions of given composition (e.g. salts, acid, alkali);
10-11) Chemical elements and compounds (determination of the molecular weight and chemical formula);
12-13) Gases (preparation, physical and chemical properties);
14-15) Given experiment or supplement.
