Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The aim of the General chemistry 2 course is systematization of basic chemical concepts about the properties of matter at the macroscopic, particle and symbolic level and to integrate existing and new knowledge in a conceptual units.

COURSE CONTENT:
LECTURES
Atomic-molecular structure of matter and non-bonded interactions (1-7):
1) Periodic table of elements - metals, crystals and the basics of crystal structure;
2-3) Chemical bonds - ionic bond, properties and structure of ionic compounds, Born-Haber enthalpy diagram;
4-6) Chemical bonds - covalent bond, historical development of the term, properties, structure of molecules (Lewis symbols and structures and VSEPR-model); Metallic bond;
7) Non-bonded interactions - polarity, structure and properties of matter (hydrogen bonds, physical and chemical properties - particle level);
9) Chemical kinetics: average rate of consumption of reactants or formation of products, rate of the chemical reaction, reaction rate constant, factors affecting the rate of chemical reaction;
10) Chemical equilibrium, kinetic approach - equilibrium constant and composition of equilibrium mixture (solutions, gas mixtures, heterogeneous systems);
11-14) Equilibrium in solutions of acids, bases and salts;
15) Electrochemistry (galvanic cell, standard electrode potentials, electrolysis cell); chemical reactivity and electrochemical series.

SEMINAR (stoichiometry)
1-2) Crystals and crystal structures of metals and ionic compounds;
3-4) Colligative properties of solutions;
5-6) Chemical kinetics;
7-8) Chemical equilibrium (basic terms);
9-12) Equilibrium in electrolyte solutions - acids, bases, salts, pH-value, protolytic reactions;
13-14) Electrochemistry - electrolytes, galvanic cell, standard electrode potential; electrolysis cell, Faraday's laws of electrolysis;
