COURSE CONTENT:
1. Brief history of mineralogy, definition of minerals, three-dimensional periodic structure, crystal lattice, unit cell, crystal systems, morphology, symmetry elements of crystal polyhedra, crystal form, habit, zone, third law of crystallography (law of zones)
2. First law of crystallography (law of constancy of interfacial angles), spheric projection, stereographic projection, drawing stereographic projection, Wulff net
3. Second law of crystallography (law of rational ratio of parameters, indexing of faces and directions on a crystal, zonal equations, point groups (crystal classes), Herman-Maugin symbols, point group names
4.-5. Forms and stereographic projections of holohedry of the orthorhombic, monoclinic and triclinic systems
6. Forms and stereographic projections of the tetragonal system (holohedry) and the hexagonal system (holohedry, rhombohedral hemihedry)
7. Forms and stereographic projections of the cubic system (holohedry, tetrahedral and pentagonal hemihedry)
8. Complementary forms, pseudosymmetry, pseudoforms, problems in determining the symmetry
9. Definition of crystal structures, atomic coordinates, internal symmetry elements, unit cells, Bravais lattices, space groups, international crystallographic tables
10. Dependence of crystal structures on chemical bonds, coordination number and coordination polyhedra, structures of diamond, halite, fluorite and spinel, isomorphism, polymorphism, polytypism, pseudomorphism, mineraloids

12. Physical properties of minerals: habitus, aggregates, density, hardness, cleavage, parting, fracture, tenacity, colour, luminescence, streak, lustre, electrical, magnetic and other properties
13. Crystallochemical classification of minerals, introduction to systematic mineralogy with an overview of some of the most important mineral species
14.-15. X-ray diffraction on a crystal, Laue equations, Bragg law, X-ray diffraction analysis, XRD method on a powder, theory and principles of powder method application
