Katarina Leko was born on January 4, 1991, in Metković, Croatia. After completing her primary and secondary education, in 2009 she enrolled in the study program of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 2013 and her Master’s degree in 2015, specializing in Physical and Organic Chemistry. Her Master’s thesis, Synthesis and Thermodynamics of Complexation of Lipophilic O-Mannosides with β-Cyclodextrin, was conducted under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Josip Požar and Assoc. Prof. Rosana Ribić. During her studies, she received the Rector’s Award, the Special Rector’s Award, and the Chemistry Department Award for student scientific work. In 2016, she joined the Division of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, and enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Chemistry. Her doctoral dissertation, Fluorescent Calixarene Derivatives: Synthesis And Thermodynamics Of Complexation Reactions With Metal Cations, supervised by Academician Vladislav Tomišić, was defended in 2025. She is currently employed as a Senior Expert Associate at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. She participates in teaching seminar classes in Chemical Kinetics at the graduate level, and laboratory classes in Physical Chemistry Laboratory I and II, Basic Physical Chemistry Laboratory, Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry, and Advanced Physical Chemistry Laboratory I and II. She has supervised four Master’s theses and three student projects that received the Rector’s Award. She has participated, or continues to participate, in four projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. She was the principal investigator of one and a collaborator on five professional projects conducted in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry (companies Xellia d.o.o. and PLIVA d.o.o.). She is a co-author of fourteen scientific papers published in journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases and has participated in numerous national and international scientific conferences. She is also actively engaged in science popularization. Since 2021, she has held the position of Deputy Head of the Calorimetry Laboratory and the NMR Spectroscopy Laboratory, both established within the framework of the Centre of Excellence in Chemistry infrastructure project. She is a member of the Croatian Chemical Society.
