Biography

Tin Klačić was born on July 23, 1993, in Zagreb. After graduating from the "Antun Augustinčić" Elementary School in Zaprešić in 2008, he enrolled in the V. Gymnasium in Zagreb, graduating in 2012. During his school education, he participated in numerous chemistry and physics competitions, and it is especially noteworthy that T. Klačić received recognition for winning 2nd place at the 2012 state chemistry competition. During high school, he began volunteering at the Department of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Ruđer Bošković Institute under the leadership of Dr. Tomislav Portada and at the Division of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science in Zagreb under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Marijana Đaković, which resulted in his first publication in 2012.

He enrolled in the undergraduate study of chemistry at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb in 2012 and completed it in 2015 with a thesis entitled "Thermodynamics of Surface Reactions" (mentor: Prof. Dr. Tajana Begović). During his undergraduate studies, he volunteered at the Division of Organic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ivana Biljan, and at the Institute of Physics under the guidance of Dr. Marko Kralj (2014-2015). After that, in 2015, he started volunteering at the Division of Physical Chemistry, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Tajana Begović, and enrolled in the Graduate study of chemistry at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb (fields: physical chemistry and organic chemistry). For his work "Dimerization of dinitrobenzene derivatives on gold surfaces" (mentors Prof. Dr. Ivana Biljana and Dr. Marko Kralj), he was awarded the Rector's Award of the University of Zagreb in 2016. In the same year, he received the award of the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb for scientific work. As part of the Erasmus+ program, T. Klačić spent two months scientifically improving himself at the Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) in Germany under the guidance of Dr. Johannes Lützenkirchen (h-index 38). He completed his graduate studies in chemistry in 2017 with the defense of his diploma thesis entitled "Surface potential at the (111) fluorite/aqueous electrolyte solution interface", which he prepared under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Tajana Begović. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, he was the recipient of a state scholarship for excellent students, the Croatian Energy Award, and a scholarship from the City of Zaprešić. In 2017, he enrolled in the Doctoral study program in Chemistry (field: physical chemistry) at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. During his doctoral studies, T. Klačić completed several one-month scientific stays at foreign institutions where he received scientific training, in 2019 and 2021 at the Faculty of Chemistry (Brno, Czech Republic) under the guidance of Prof. Miroslav Pekař and in 2020 at the Faculty of Health Sciences (Ljubljana, Slovenia) under the guidance of Prof. Klemen Bohinc. He prepared his doctoral dissertation entitled "Specific effects of ions on the formation and properties of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid) multilayers" under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Davor Kovačević and successfully defended it on July 11, 2023. During 2025, he spent three months on postdoctoral training at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands, under the mentorship of Prof. Wiebe de Vos and Prof. Saskia Lindhoud.

Since 2018, he has been employed at the Division of Physical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, first as a research assistant, and then as a senior research assistant since 2024. From 2020 to 2023, he served as the Deputy Representative of Associate Degrees of the Chemistry Department in the Council of the Faculty of Science, and since 2023, he has served as the Representative of Associate Degrees of the Chemistry Department in the Council of the Faculty of Science.

In the winter semester, he participates in delivering lectures, seminars, and laboratories in the course Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry (undergraduate study of molecular biology) and in teaching the course Advanced Physical Chemistry Laboratory 1 (graduate study of chemistry). In the summer semester, he participates in teaching the courses Physical Chemistry (integrated undergraduate and graduate study of physics and chemistry), Physical Chemistry Laboratory 2 (undergraduate study of chemistry), and Advanced Physical Chemistry Laboratory 2 (graduate study of chemistry). T. Klačić is a co-supervisor of one diploma thesis that is in progress. Also, as an assistant mentor, he participated in the preparation of seven diploma theses, two studies awarded by the Rector's Award, and one of which received the Award of the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb for scientific work. Also, as an assistant mentor, he participated in the implementation of an internship for five students of the Department of Chemistry. He was also the assistant mentor for foreign students during their stay within the CEEPUS network (4 students) and the COST action (1 student).

T. Klačić's scientific work is related to the field of nanotechnology with an emphasis on scientific and research interests related to colloidal and interfacial chemistry and the physical chemistry of macromolecules. He is currently an associate on the bilateral Croatian-Slovenian project "Adsorption of polyelectrolytes on nanoparticles" (led by Prof. Davor Kovačević and Prof. Klemen Bohinc, University of Ljubljana), funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth of the Republic of Croatia, and previously he was an associate on three other research projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. He was also the principal investigator of the project "Anticorrosion protection of copper with multilayer polyelectrolyte nanofilm" funded by the Foundation of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

T. Klačić is a co-author of 21 scientific articles and one professional article. According to Scopus, his current h-index is 8. He personally participated in 18 scientific conferences with 11 oral (one of which was an invited lecture) and 7 poster presentations, and is a co-author of another 37 presentations at scientific conferences. He also participated in the organization of the 25th Croatian Meeting of Chemists and Chemical Engineers as a volunteer. He has reviewed papers for the journals Applied Geochemistry and Croatica Chemica Acta.

He is the recipient of the annual award for excellence in publishing of the Department of Chemistry (for 2025), the Annual Science Award of the Faculty of Science in the category of doctoral and postdoctoral students (2024), and the award for the best oral presentation at the European Student Colloid Conference (2022). He also received recognition for winning 1st place in the problem section of the international summer school Supramolecular and Colloidal Chemistry and Physics for the Life Sciences (2020).

Since 2013, he has been a member of the Croatian Chemical Society, and since 2020, he has been a member of the Croatian Microscopy Society, the European Microscopy Society, and the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy. He has also been a member of the European Colloid and Interface Society since 2021.

In addition to his teaching and scientific interests, T. Klačić is active in the popularization of science through various events. In the 2012/2013 school year, he participated in preparing students of the "Antun Augustinčić" Elementary School for chemistry competitions, and in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 school years, he participated in preparing students of the 5th Gymnasium for chemistry competitions. He organized a series of popular science lectures and workshops in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science under the title "Youth Week for Science", which were held in October 2012 at the "Antun Augustinčić" Elementary School under the auspices of the city of Zaprešić. He participated in the Open Day of the Institute of Physics (2015), the Open Day of Chemistry (2018 and 2019), and the Festival of Science (2018). Within the framework of the Education Section of the Croatian Chemical Society, he held two lectures entitled "Dependence of the rate of sucrose hydrolysis on the concentration of hydrochloric acid" and "Preparation and structural analysis of substituted N-benzylanilines", and within the framework of the "Purple in Chemistry" project implemented by the Student Section of the Croatian Chemical Society, he held a lecture entitled "Purple Electrolysis". Also, within the framework of the Chemical Engineering Workshops of the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technologists, he held two workshops entitled "Polarimetry" and "Guess the salt in water by analysis!" In addition, in the period from 2015 to 2018, he also participated in the preparations of students for the European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO) and the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO). Since 2019, he has been the co-leader of the Croatian delegation at the International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO), and since 2025, he has been the co-leader of the Croatian delegation at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), in whose preparations he has participated since 2019. He was also a member of the academic committee of the European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES), which was held in Croatia in 2025.
