Description:
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
Objectives of the course are to introduce students briefly with the development of physics within wider historical context and to discuss the potential of particular historical episodes for a more successful physics teaching. A special emphasize is on the intuitive elements, founded in everyday experience and presented in particular stages of the development of human inquiry into nature, which can interfere with pupils' acquisition of modern conceptions. Hence, the course devotes more attention to the nature-knowledge before 18th century, in order to familiarise students with methods and modes of description and explanation of natural phenomena presented in science of these periods.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS:
1) Introduction to the course. Physics and history. The question of the beginning of physics.
2) Prehistory and early civilizations: mathematics, technology, worldview. Babylonian arithmetical astronomy.
3) The beginnings of philosophy in Greece. Problems, methods and teachings of the Miletians.
4) Pythagoreans: mathematics and cosmology. The problem of change and atomism.
5) Plato's natural philosophy. The beginnings of theoretical astronomy and ancient abstract-mathematical science.
6) Aristotle's natural philosophy.
7) Abstract-mathematical science in Hellenistic society (astronomy, mechanics, optics, musical intervals).
8) The transplantation of Greek nature-knowledge to Islamic civilization and to medieval Europe.
9) The transplantation of Greek nature-knowledge to Renaissance civilization.
10) 17th century: the transformation of ancient atomism (Beeckman and Descartes) and the transformation of ancient abstract-mathematical science (Kepler and Galilei). Experimental science. Causes, results, consequences.
11) 17th century: the problem of force and Newton's synthesis.
12) Heat: experiments and theories.
13) Electricity and magnetism: experiments and theories.
14) Light: experiments and theories.
15) Modern atomic theory of matter: spectra, radioactivity, the quantum of action.
