**THE STATE AWARDS FOR SCIENCE** are awarded by the Republic of Croatia for extremely important achievements in scientific research, for expanding scientific knowledge and for scientific achievements in the application of the results of scientific research, achieved by scientists, researchers and novices. The Law on Croatian State Awards for Science provides for the awarding of four types of state awards for science. These are **the Lifetime Achievement Award**, **the Annual Science Award**, **the Annual Science Promotion and Popularisation Award**, **and the Annual Research Fellows Award.**

Below is a list of winners from the Department of Mathematics by the type of state award. The title of the winner is stated according to the status at the time of awarding.

__I. The Lifetime Achievement Award__

**Prof. dr. sc.** **SVETOZAR KUREPA** **(Professor Emeritus, University of Zagreb)** - **2005** for the entire scientific, teaching and professional work in the scientific field of natural sciences, especially in mathematics in the Republic of Croatia. Extensive scientific work includes 70 papers in the field of theory of linear operators, theory of operator and functional equations and theory of measure, some of which are cited in numerous world monographs. The opus includes the authorship and co-authorship of 15 books. His two extensive monographs "Final-Dimensional Vector Spaces" and "Functional Analysis-Elements of Operator Theory" are an outstanding scientific achievement. Prof. Kurepa is responsible for the introduction and development of mathematical disciplines that were not previously nurtured in Croatia, which gave a significant contribution to applied mathematics and in general the development and organization of mathematical activities in the Republic of Croatia.

**Prof. dr. sc.** **BRANKO SOUČEK** **(retired) **- **2012** for the entire scientific research work in the field of technical sciences, field of computer science, and especially for the development of the first digital computer in the Republic of Croatia and for 10 published world-relevant books in computer science.

__II. The Annual Science Award__

**Prof. dr. sc. NIKOLA SANDRIĆ – 2021 **for a significant scientific achievement in field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, branch of probability theory and statistics, for contributions in the field of theory and application of random processes.

**Prof. dr. sc**. **FILIP NAJMAN** - **2020** for scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, branch of algebra, for new results in the theory of elliptic curves.

**Prof. dr. sc. JOSIP TAMBAČA** - **2019** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, branch of applied mathematics and mathematical modeling, for six papers published in 2019 in top international scientific journals.

**Prof. dr. sc. IGOR PAŽANIN** - **2017** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, branch of applied mathematics and modeling, for contributions of boundary and initial-boundary value problems for partial differential equations with applications in fluid mechanics.

**Prof. dr. sc. PAVLE PANDŽIĆ** - **2012** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, for a number of significant contributions and discoveries in the theory of representations of real reductive Lie groups, central mathematical theory closely related to many areas of geometry, analysis, number theory, algebra and theoretical physics.

**Prof. dr. sc. HRVOJE ŠIKIĆ** - **2011** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics, for contribution to harmonic analysis, especially in wave theory, a modern and extremely important field of mathematics that has spectacular applications outside mathematics.

**Prof. dr. sc. ZORAN VONDRAČEK** - **2010** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences in the scientific field of probability theory and mathematical statistics and for the publication of a number of scientific papers in probability theory, especially in probability theory of potential with jumps.

**Prof. dr. sc. DRAŽEN ADAMOVIĆ** - **2009** for a significant scientific achievement in the field of natural sciences, for an important contribution to the complex theory of algebras of vertex operators and the theory of representations of infinitely dimensional Lie algebras and superalgebras.

**Prof. dr. sc. ANDREJ DUJELLA** - **2006** for significant scientific achievements in the field natural sciences in number theory. His discoveries in the field of finding Diophantine m- Tuesday has become one of the world's leading experts on the subject. His are also important research in the field of elliptic curves, which are comparable to research in the most famous world centers such as Harvard University or the National Security Agency.

**Dr. sc. ZLATKO DRMAČ** - **2005** for a significant scientific achievement in the field of natural sciences of numerical mathematics. With his discoveries in numerical linear algebra, and especially with his new algorithm for singular matrix decomposition, he ranked among the world's leading specialists in this field. The installation of software based on this algorithm in the LAPACK software package, which is being developed by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advaced Research Project Agency in the USA, is underway.

**Prof. dr. sc. EDUARD MARUŠIĆ - PALOKA** - **2004** for significant scientific achievements in the field of natural sciences, especially for solving some particularly difficult problems in fluid mechanics and elasticity theory, which have achieved results of lasting value on a global scale.

**Prof. dr. sc. VJERAN HARI - 1997** for a significant scientific achievement in mathematics, especially in the field of uterine algorithms.

__III. The Annual Promotion and Popularization Award__

**Dr. sc. FRANKA MIRIAM BRUECKLER** - **2009** for the field of natural sciences, for the contribution to the popularization of science and mathematics, for the introduction of electronic means in mathematics teaching and demonstrating the connection of mathematics with other sciences and art, especially for work on topics: duel to symmetry, topology or mathematics with ribbons and ropes, and crystals are mathematicians, World Year of Mathematics 2000, making notable strides in raising public awareness of mathematics and the natural sciences.

**Prof. dr. sc. MIRKO POLONIJO** - **2007** for the field of natural sciences to contribute to the popularization of mathematical science - from preschool children to adult lovers of mathematics, and this approach to mathematics from early childhood enabled early detection of gifted children and their motivation and inclusion in quality math education.

__IV. The Annual Research Fellowes Award__

**LUCIJA VALIDŽIĆ, M.Sc. math.** - **2016** for the field of natural sciences, field of mathematics. Lucija Validžić's scientific interest is the study of the connections between topology and computability, and in 2016 she published, in equal co-authorship, three scientific papers on computability in different topological structures in very reputable world journals.

**Dr. sc. FILIP NAJMAN** - **2010** for the field of natural sciences, for scientific production in 2010, and especially for his contribution to algorithmic number theory, for Diophantine equations and elliptic curves.

**Dr. sc. IGOR PAŽANIN** - **2008** for the field of natural sciences, for successful scientific work of asymptomatic analysis of boundary value problems for partial differential equations of fluid mechanics, especially those for viscous flow in thin areas, as well as his most significant contribution, which is the formulation and rigorous justification of mathematical model such a flow.

**Doc. dr. sc. JOSIP TAMBAČA** -** 2001** for the field of natural sciences, for outstanding works in mathematical modeling of rods within the linearized theory of elasticity.

**STATE AWARDS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WORK** are the prequels of the State Awards for Science and were awarded from 1960 until 1993. They consist of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Scientific Research Achievement Awards, which bear the names of our prominent scientists.

__Lifetime Achievement Award__

**Academician SIBE MARDEŠIĆ** - **1990**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for distinguished scientific research work in the field of natural sciences, especially in the field of mathematics - topology.

**Dr. STANKO BILINSKI - 1982**, retired full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for outstanding scientific research work in the field of natural sciences - mathematics - especially geometry.

**Dr. ZLATKO JANKOVIĆ - 1971**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for works in the field of vector and tensor analysis and their applications.

**Academician ŽELJKO MARKOVIĆ - 1968**, retired professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for scientific work in the field of linear differential and integral equations, for research into ancient Greek mathematical philosophy and for research into the life and work of Ruđer Bošković.

__“Ruđer Bošković” Award__

**Dr. MIRKO PRIMC - 1992**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for significant scientific discoveries in the field of natural sciences, especially in the field of mathematics for the development of the theory of the representation of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras.

**Dr. BRANKO NAJMAN - 1991**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for a significant scientific discovery in the field of natural sciences, in the field of mathematics, in the problem of eigenvalues and Hermitian operators and in the problem of non-relativistic limes for the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations.

**Dr. MARKO TADIĆ - 1989**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for a significant scientific discovery in the field of natural sciences, especially in the field of mathematics.

**Dr. HRVOJE KRALJEVIĆ - 1983**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for significant scientific activity in the field of natural sciences – the field of mathematics (theory of representative groups).

**Dr. SIBE MARDEŠIĆ - 1965**, associate professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for processing the problem of applying inverse limes to the approximation of compacts using polyhedra.

**Dr. SVETOZAR KUREPA - 1963**, professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for the papers: "On the n-th roots of normal operators" and "On the roots of one element of the Banach algebra".

__“Fran Tućan” Award for popularization of science__

**Dr. BORIS PAVKOVIĆ - 1991**, full professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, for the popularization of the natural sciences, especially mathematics.
