COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
An operating system is a set of programs that act as intermediaries between the user of a computer, the computer hardware, and the application programs. The main objective of the course is to develop an understanding of the purpose of an operating system and the mechanisms used in its implementation.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS:
1. Operating system roles, interfaces, computer and operating, system components, design issues
2. Device organization, I/O structure, interrupts. Threads and processes, thread management and context switching, multiprocessor issues
3. Mutual-exclusion, kernel, synchronization and communication, semaphores and monitors
4. Deterministic and stochastic task systems models, preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling, CPU scheduling
5. Segmentation, paging, hierarchical organization and virtual memory
6. Types of disks and data organization, file-system organization, file descriptor, typical file-system functions, virtual file system, memory-mapped files. Redundant array of independent disks (RAID)
7. Communication between the processes within one system and in a distributed system
8. Kinds of virtualization, hypervisors.
