Description:
EXPECTED COMPETENCES TO BE ACQUIRED:
1. To explain the principles of mass spectrometry.
2. To compare ion sources and mass analyzers as well.
3. To interpret mass spectra.
4. To explain gas, liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography.
5. To interpret chromatogram.
6. To explain immunoassay formats for qualitative and quantitative analyses.
7. To choose an adequate immunoassay according to analyte concentration.
8. To explain the principles of chemical sensors.
9. To explain potentiometric methods for determination of ions in complex samples.
10. To choose adequate instrumental technique and method for qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of different samples.

COURSE CONTENT:
LECTURES
1. Principles of mass spectrometry.
2. Ion sources.
3. Mass analyzers.
4. Analysis of small molecules, analysis of macromolecules.
5. Chromatography: introduction to chromatographic separations.
6. Gas chromatography, chromatographic columns, detectors.
7. Hyphenated techniques (GC-MS, GC-IR, GC-AED), applications.
8. Liquid chromatography, chromatographic columns, detectors.
9. Hyphenated techniques (LC-MS, GC-IR, GC-AED), applications.
10. Supercritical fluid chromatography, applications, interpretation of chromatograms.
11. Enzymes in analytical chemistry: characteristics as analytical reagens, determination by stoichiometric methods, determination by kinetic methods.
12. Immunoassay: introduction, assay formats, immunoprecipitation, aglutination, aglutination inhibition, labels (radioactive, fluorescent and enzyme labels), application.
13. Chemical sensors: introduction, potentiometric sensors, applications.
14. Optodes, biosensors, applications.

SEMINARS
1.-4. week: Mass spectrometry - questions and problems, interpretation of mass spectra.
6.-8. Chromatography - questions and problems.
9.-15. Students presentations of scientific papers dealing with techniques and methods comprised in the course.
