Vuk Tvrtko Opačić was born in Zagreb on 9 February 1976. After completing the Classical Gymnasium secondary school, in 1994 he enrolled in the study of geography at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, and graduated in 1999. In 2000, he enrolled in postgraduate studies at the same faculty, and has been employed at the Division of Social Geography since 2001. He received his Doctorate in 2008 with the dissertation “Vacation and recreation homes in coastal Croatia – the geographic aspects of the phenomenon” under the supervision of Professor Zoran Curić. In 2009, he was named an assistant professor, in 2014 an associate professor and in 2020 a full professor.
He has led and cooperated on many domestic and international scientific and expert projects, primarily involving the topics of tourism geography, which is his primary scientific and teaching interest. To date, he has researched the geographic aspects of weekend (second) homes and the tourism and recreational evaluation of urban green areas, protected areas and natural and cultural heritage, types of tourism destinations, tourism development of spatial areas, tourism in regional and local development, attraction foundation of (selective) forms of tourism, spatial aspects of tourism relations and demographic trends, and tourism and transport connections of peripheral areas.
He has published 36 scientific papers in scientific journals and conference anthologies. He is author of the scientific book Opačić, V. T. (2012): Vikendaštvo u hrvatskom priobalju: jučer, danas, sutra [Second homes in the Croatian coastal area: past, present, future] (Hrvatska sveučilišna naklada, Zagreb), and a chapter Geografija Hrvatske [Croatian Geography] in the university textbook Hrvatska na prvi pogled: udžbenik hrvatske culture [First Glance at Croatia: a textbook of Croatian culture] (FF press, Zagreb, 2014; 2016; 2017), and the chapter: Tourism valorisation of cultural heritage, in the scientific book Cultural Urban Heritage: Development, Learning and Landscape Strategies, Urban Book Series (Springer Nature, Cham). He is co-author of the university textbook Curić, Z., Glamuzina, N., Opačić, V. T. (2013): Geografija turizma – regionalni pregled [Tourism Geography – a regional overview] (Naklada Ljevak, Zagreb) and the chapter: Opačić, V. T., Koderman, M. (2018): From socialist Yugoslavia to the European Union: second home development in Croatia and Slovenia in the scientific book The Routledge Handbook of Second Home Tourism and Mobilities (Routledge, London). He was an editor in the anthology Koderman, M., Opačić, V. T. (Eds.) (2020): Challenges of tourism development in protected areas of Croatia and Slovenia (Založba Univerze na Primorskem i Hrvatsko geografsko društvo, Koper – Zagreb), in which he also co-authored three chapters. He submitted abstracts to 28 scientific conferences (21 international and 7 domestic). He peer-reviewed one foreign scientific book and 45 scientific papers in domestic and foreign scientific journals and anthologies of domestic and international scientific conferences. Since 2015, he has been editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Hrvatski geografski glasnik.
At the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, he teaches the courses: Introduction to geography, Tourism geography, Tourism geography of Croatia, Tourism evaluation of heritage, and Geographic aspects of recreation. He is the leader of the field course, and co-lecturer in three methodology courses in the Doctoral study of Geography: Space, Region, Environment, Landscape. He has supervised or co-supervised three doctoral dissertations, one master’s these, 59 graduate and baccalaureate final papers. One of the student papers he supervised received the Rector’s Award of the University of Zagreb. He is currently supervising four doctoral candidates.
From 2009 to 2020, he was head of the branch Heritage and Tourism in the graduate university study programme Geography, research specialisation. In 2019, he was elected Head of the Division of Social Geography at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science.
He is a member of the Croatian Geographic Society, and the Committee Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change of the International Geographic Union (IGU).
