On Wednesday June 6th , starting at 15:00 prof. dr. H. Mayaffre from the University J. Fourier in Grenoble (France) will hold a seminar at the Physics Department entitled: "Quantum critical points and field induced phase transitions in quantum spin systems: examples of NMR studies on spin ladders " .

Abstract of the lecture can be found here:

In many low dimensional quantum spin systems, as those based on antiferromagnetic spin dimers, the ground state is a nonmagnetic spin liquid. The application of a magnetic field leads to the destruction of this ground state. Beyond this quantum critical point the spin gap as disappeared and lower interactions can easily express them leading in many cases to a three-dimensional ordered state.

We will present, through some spin-ladder compounds, in which the phase diagram is easily accessible to experiment, examples where the magnetic field is used as an external parameter to tune the physics in these systems (quantum critical points, one-dimensional character, 3D-ordered state, effect of additional interactions…) .
