Description:
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The goal of the course is to acquire skills of applying the learned numerical methods to the implementation of computer programs. The course should deepen the understanding of the concepts of approximation, perturbation, and stability, as well. For the practical part, a graphical environment such as MATLAB would be used, since in modern engineering applications, modeling, analysis and numerical calculations are performed by using sophisticated packages such as MATLAB. This should free students from programming details and give them the freedom to experiment with more complicated study problems. This course is at the same time a practicum in modeling and computing.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS:
1. Models with numerical linear algebra applications. Integral use of techniques and methods learned in the Practicum of numerical linear algebra along with familiarization with MATLAB.
2. Models with ordinary differential equations and methods for solving them.
3. Discrete Fourier transformation. FFT. Applications.
4. Nonlinear systems of equations. Newton's method.
Literature:
  1. Applied numerical linear algebra, J. Demmel, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1997.
  2. Matrix computations, 3rd ed., G. Golub, Ch. Van Loan, The John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 1996.
  3. Concise numerical mathematics, R. Plato, AMS, Providence, 2003.
