The Gene Center of the University of Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) carries out interdisciplinary research and teaching in the modern life sciences. The city of Munich is located in the south of Germany close to the Alps and offers a large variety of cultural events and leisure activities.
We are happy to receive applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic students for Master thesis and internship research. We will support students for a fellowship application.

Halic group is interested in the chromatin organization and the mechanism of histone chaperoning.

Chaperones bind histone proteins directly, thus preventing unfavourable DNA–histone interactions and unspecific histone aggregation. Current studies are aimed at obtaining the structures of chaperones with their cognate histones to decipher the mechanism of binding and at obtaining the structures of different chromatin binding proteins.

We also study RNAi pathways and heterochromatin formation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We use biochemical, genetical and high-throughput sequencing approaches to examine the mechanisms that mediate small RNA generation in the fission yeast.

Our research is multi-facetted and interdisciplinary in nature ranging from genetics, systems biology and molecular biology to biochemistry and structural biology.
