We are pleased to announce the 15th International European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) PhD Symposium, which will take place on November 21st-23rd 2013 at EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany.
The Symposium is organised annually by first-year PhD students at EMBL. This year, it is entitled 'Competition in Biology - The Race for Survival from Molecules to Systems'. It will connect different scales of competition research in the life sciences. Competition is fundamental to biology at all levels - molecules and cells compete for interactions whilst species compete to survive in their habitats.
The programme will comprise three sessions (Molecular Competition, Host versus Pathogen & Species Competition) to explore biological and biochemical competition both inside and outside of the cell. Confirmed speakers include Dr Ron Fouchier, Dr George Kassiotis, Prof. John Sutherland, Dr Matthew Chang, Dr Gregory Veliver and Prof. Kevin Foster. Keynote lectures will be interspersed with short talks from students, as well as networking and poster sessions on each day. Participants can submit abstracts for a short talk or a poster session. Panel discussions with established scientists will close each session.
Our conference offers an exciting, interdisciplinary and unique perspective on biological competition, providing young researchers from various international research institutes with an opportunity to interact with leading scientists in a stimulating and informal environment.
