Engineering crystalline materials using metal complexes and non-covalent interactions

 


SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT

Interdisciplinary research at the interface of chemistry and materials science has been remarkably successful at producing technologies that have revolutionized all aspects of everyday life. However, there is still a great need for new solids with ‘improved’ physical properties (faster, cheaper, smarter or more responsive than current alternatives). Unfortunately, the ability to ‘dial-in’ a property or physical response remains a major challenge. Therefore, our goal is to establish reliable avenues for the design of crystalline metal-containing materials by encoding building-blocks with structural-preferences that lead to ‘programmable’ assembly, thus avoiding serendipity and chance when targeting new materials with specific and tunable properties. To achieve this, we first need to map out the structural landscape that controls how metal complexes communicate and subsequently assemble into 3-D architectures.
New structural and spectroscopic information will be complemented by data obtained by mining the CSD, while computational methods will inform both the planning as well as the interpretation of the experimental efforts. The results obtained in this systematic and multidisciplinary research program will create new avenues towards the design of crystalline metal-containing materials based on reliable structure-activity protocols.
