Nanoporous carbon materials are or large interest for electrochemical applications, catalysis and gas storage, among many other uses. These materials are commonly produced by means of activation processes involving reaction with chemical agents. After activation, it is usually found that surface groups exist within the nanopores of the material, which in many cases involve the bonding between the carbon network and “inorganic” elements present in the chemical activating agent (such as K, Na and P). In this work, we investigate a series of porous carbons prepared using different chemical reactants, mainly using solid-state NMR methods in a multinuclear approach. The purpose of this investigation is to identify the nature of these groups and the possible interaction between the extraneous elements and the carbon-based, graphene-like planes.
